How Soon Will I Lose Weight After Surgery?

Gastric Bypass has helped millions of morbidly obese people lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle.

However, many people question exactly how much weight they’ll lose after having surgery and what they need to do to lose as much weight as possible. Before & After Gastric Bypass

Gastric Bypass patients lose weight rapidly in the first 12-21 months after surgery. The rapid weight loss is due to a variety of factors, including:

  • Not being able to have food for 24 to 48 hour period.
  • Changes in portion size when food is allowed.
  • A new diet, which regardless of surgery, will result in weight loss for morbidly obese people.

Common for Weight Loss After Surgery

Here’s a breakdown in what’s common for weight loss after surgery:

  • Six Months Post-op: Most patients have lost about 30 to 40 percent of their weight at this point.
  • Nine Months Post-op: The nine-month mark depends on your weight loss at the six-month check-in. If you lost a significant amount of weight at the six-month mark, your doctor will set a reasonable goal to hit, such as an extra two to five percent of your weight.
  • One Year after Surgery: At this point, most patients have lost about 60 to 80 percent of their weight depending on their starting weight.

While the rapid weight loss after surgery is exciting, weight loss will slow down as your stomach expands to hold more foods.
